Wakarla Glass Gorge Tours

Join Reg Wilton on a tag-a-long tour in the Flinders Ranges. Reg is an Adnyamathanha man who grew up on a sheep station on the edge of Lake Frome in the Northern Flinders region. His Aboriginal owned and operated Wakarla Glass Gorge tag-along tours journey into his traditional home and offer a unique opportunity to spend one-on-one time with Reg as he imparts traditional knowledge of the Dreaming stories connected to this land, including the Seven Sisters, Kangaroo and Euro, Eagle and the Crow (Wakarla).

Travel with Reg along the scenic and magnificent Glass Gorge where a leisurely walk along a tree lined creek bed will bring you to ancient rock carvings. Nearby, visit one of the Flinders Ranges most significant mining ruins, the Nuccaleena Copper mine site. Copper was discovered here in the mid-1850s and a small town was built around the mine site, the ruins of which still stand today. Harsh conditions and a severe drought ended the mine’s operations in 1866.

Spent a very pleasant day with Reg Wilton who proudly showed us around his country. Our drive included visits to Glass Gorge, Aboriginal rock carvings, Beltana – where he spent part of his childhood, & a remote abandoned north Flinders copper mine complete with its sad little cemetery. Reg is very knowledgeable about his local indigenous culture. And the Anzac biscuits for morning tea were delicious! Highly recommend.
