Kangaroo Island

Ask any South Australian where their favourite local getaway spot is and there’s a good chance they’ll answer, Kangaroo Island.

About 110 kilometres off Cape Jervis and accessible generally only via ferry, KI boasts more to see and do than almost anywhere else in Australia.

With stunning natural scenery, vibrant wildlife and incredible food and wine, few places so small can offer so much.

From some of the state’s best fishing spots, to guided tours of Seal Bay and its resident Australian sea lions, to wildlife parks and picturesque lagoons teeming with bird and aquatic life, it should make the top of any nature lovers’ list.

Even if you somehow manage not to spot a penguin or fur seal, the surrounding vistas will be more than enough.

The Flinders Chase National Park, home to the aptly named Remarkable Rocks and the Admirals Arch, is a must see.

Explorers will also discover a treasure-trove of historical sites that give a glimpse into the area’s maritime heritage, from shipwrecks to grand old lighthouses.

And once you’ve finished all of that there’s the bustling island capital of Kingscote, where the island’s thriving agricultural industry shows off its wares in spectacular fashion.
